Tributes have been pouring in for Idriss Deby, who was until Tuesday, the president of Chad.
The 68-year-old leader died from injuries sustained in a gun battle with rebels.
While some people frowned at his long stay in office, others praised him for the courage to lead the country’s army against the rebels.
Some Nigerian Twitter users have showered encomiums on him.

May his soul rest in peace. He was a leader by example, not the paper Generals we have here, whose work is to use pen and steal money earmarked for weapons and then give order to the junior officers to go on a suicide mission with obsolete weapons. RIP.. You'll be remembered.

BREAKING: Chad President Idriss Déby, who came to power in 1990, is dead. He died from injuries sustained while leading his troops against rebels. At least he died in battle (a heroes death). He died while fighting a cause he believed in. Unlike one general we know. RIP!! pic.twitter.com/hg7RP7v1fH

France has managed 2 father to son dictatorial transitions;
1. Gnassingbe Eyadema to Faure Gnassingbe (Togo).
2. Omar Bongo Ondimba to Ali Bongo Ondimba (Gabon).Now a third – from Idriss Deby to his son (Chad).
Congratulations France, "defender of democracy in Africa"!!

One president that I know sponges on his people, waiting for them to die for himPresident Idris lived for his people
One that I know is, well, snuffing the life out of "his" people on a daily basis
