Gully erosion threatens Kagoro-Gidan Waya road

Motorists and commuters plying the Kagoro-Gidan Waya road in the southern part of Kaduna State are groaning over the deplorable condition of the road, as emerging gully erosion threatens the highway.

Motorists say the road, which serves as a gateway between some northern and southern states, remains a nightmare due to armed robbery and recurring crises and is now deteriorating due to gully erosion.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that dozens of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles conveying goods such as grains, vegetables, fruits, livestock as well as building materials ply the road to their various destinations daily. However, due to the poor condition of the road, which is flanked by ravine and forest areas as well as sharp bends, many of these articulated vehicles have fallen off the road.

A cross section of motorists and commuters, who spoke on the development, expressed fear over the deteriorating state of the road and appealed to the federal and state governments for urgent intervention.

A commuter, Stephen Victor Dutse, said the worst portion of the road stretches from Tudun Wada to Pasakori, which he said is at the verge of collapse.

“As a major highway leading to many states, not less than 50 heavy trucks ply it daily, not to mention other vehicles that convey students of the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, to the school and other commuters,” he said.

He said those going to Abuja, Nasarawa, Benue states, and by extension, the eastern and western parts of the country from North West often ply the road.

Also speaking, a commercial driver, Zakariya’u Saleh Gidan Waya, who has been driving on the road as a commercial transporter for over 30 years, said he recently lost his brother who was involved in an accident on the road.
