9 months after, family threatens to sue police over missing constable

Family of a missing police constable in Ogun State, Emmanuel Gene, has threatened to drag the Nigeria Police Force before the Industrial Court, nine months after fruitless effort of searching for his whereabouts.

Gene, who was attached to Ijebu-Igbo divisional headquarters, was allegedly kidnapped by hoodlums during an operation in Aba Tuntun in December 2020.

Since his reported abduction, the family expressed worry that there was no news of his whereabouts as his wife, who just gave birth to a baby, wallowed in tears day and night.

Eko Trust reports that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had shortly after the incident met with leaders of the community and demanded the release of the cop dead or alive.

In a petition written by their counsel, Kehinde Bamiwola Esq and addressed to the Chairman, Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, the family demanded that Emmanuel be rescued dead or alive.

Speaking on the matter, Bamiwola emphasised that his clients would seek redress in court if the police failed to provide Emmanuel.

“We will seek redress under the duty of care principles at the Industrial Court and demand compensation.

“However, the ultimate thing is to let the family know his whereabout. Police can’t claim he had been kidnapped without rescuing him,” he said.
