‘Lack of FMC worsening health challenges in Gombe’

The Senator representing Gombe Central in the Senate, Danjuma Goje has said that the huge gap between primary and tertiary healthcare delivery in Gombe State created by the absence of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) is worsening health crisis in the state.

He stated this in his lead debate on the  bill seeking to establish Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Deba, Gombe, which has scaled second reading in the Senate.

The lawmaker lamented that since the upgrading of the existing FMC to a Teaching Hospital, the state was yet to get another one.

He said the health facility, when established, would alleviate the suffering of the people in seeking tertiary healthcare services.

He said,  “Communicable diseases have continued to ravage many Nigerian communities due to the distance between the communities and tertiary healthcare institutions. Patients cannot access specialist hospitals where their ailments can be properly diagnosed and adequate treatment given.

“In Gombe State, the story is different as there exist no Federal Medical Centre after the upgrading of the existing one to a teaching hospital hence the passage of this Bill becomes expedient to alleviate the sufferings of Gombe people.”

He said the hospital, when established, would provide services in specialized areas like neuro-surgery, cardiology, urology, orthopedics, pediatrics, internal medicine, radiotherapy, ear nose and throat treatment (ENT), gynecology, psychiatry, nuclear medicine and other fields of medicine that may be required by Nigerians.
