Council loses N30m yearly to ghost workers

A report by the Jigawa State House of Assembly has uncovered how the Education Department of Dutse Local Government Council has been losing about N30 million yearly to ghost workers.

Chairman, House Committee on Education, Surajo Kantoga, made the revelation while submitting the committee’s report on its findings during the recent verification exercise it conducted for primary and junior secondary school teachers in Dutse area council.

He said its findings indicate that the local government has been losing N2.5m every month to ghost teachers in the education department of the council.

“The committee during its sitting discovered that about 84 teachers were accused of different offences, while it ordered stoppage of payment of monthly salary of 16 teachers on the basis of lack of competence and absence of approved paper qualifications to teach,” he said.

Receiving the report, the Dutse Council Chairman, Bala Usman Chamo, commended the committee for a job well done, assuring that the implementation of the committee reports will go a long way in bringing sanity, transparency, and social justice in local government administration.
