There is lingering confusion over the chairmanship of the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) one month after the death of Dr Adegbola Dominic declared by the court as the party chairman.
Before Dominic’s death, he and Engr. Deji Doherty laid claim to the position.

Dominic’s death was preceded by that of the secretary of the party, Prince Muiz Shodipe-Dosunmu. Both died of complications from COVID-19.
Daily Trust reports that late Dominic had challenged the special congress of the party held in November 2019 which produced Doherty as the chairman, and claimed to be the substantive chairman having succeeded the former chairman who resigned from the party.
On June 23, the Lagos State High Court presided over by Justice Oyekan Abdullahi reinstated Dominic as chairman.
However, Doherty, backed by the national leadership of the party, insisted he remained in the party, saying the court judgement never ordered the installation of late Dominic.
Daily Trust reports that following the death of Dominic, many members were confused over who is actually the party’s chairman and are now awaiting the conduct of the next congress to elect new members of the state working committee.
“In the case of Lagos PDP, I don’t know whether we have a chairman or not but I know that there is a congress coming up. Definitely, we shall have a chairman before the end of the year,” said a former chairman of the party, Capt. Tunji Shelle (rtd).
When contacted yesterday, Doherty declined to comment on the chairmanship position, saying the matter is sub judice. He however said he has no plan to re-contest.
