Shelve congress in Yelwa Shendam, Plateau PDP told

Stakeholders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yelwa ward of Shendam LGA of Plateau State, on Tuesday, cautioned the state caretaker committee against holding any congress in the area as it may result in a repeat of the 2003 ethnoreligious crisis in the area.

The stakeholders said the 2003 ethnoreligious crisis in Yelwa Shendam was inflamed by matters arising from the PDP congresses which caused mayhem in the town and spread to other parts of the state, leading to a state of emergency.

The party faithful said PDP’s position to go ahead with the congress despite a pending appeal in court was a clear indication of imposition on the people of the area, and called on the State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, to act fast before it was too late.

One of the stakeholders and former councillor of the area, Adam Muhammed Adamu, told journalists in Jos that “there was a complaint that there was a pending appeal and members were told that the appeal would be withdrawn but only to realise that was not true. It was a clear deception.”

Responding, a member of the sub-committee of the party in the state, Mike Dapianlong, confirmed that there was a misunderstanding among members of the party in the area but that it had been addressed.
