NAFDAC warns against use of insecticides, detergents, others for preserving food, meat

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has warned traders against use of insecticides, detergents and other harmful chemicals to preserve food items and meats.

NAFDAC Edo State Coordinator, Pharm. Itua Esther, gave the warning over the weekend while sensitising traders of various markets across the state.

She said the sensitization became necessary due to increasing cases of kidney and liver problem, diabetes among other illness occasioned by traders’ harmful practices.

“We have noticed that traders use snippers to preserve grains against weevils and formalin to preserve corpse for meat in order not to get spoilt and be able to still sell it the following day.”

She added, “others use detergents to soak Satana (Akpu) and wash melon so as to make it very white among other harmful practices.”

“All these chemicals are poisonous and harmful to humans body and they are responsible for increasing cases of kidney and liver failure in the country today.”

“When you go to our hospitals today you see young people with kidney and liver failure. This is why we are visiting markets in the state to let you know that these practices are bad and should be stopped.

She, however, urged members of the public to report such harmful practices to NAFDAC for appropriate action and to save lives.
