Jos crises: Biz men, traders to protect students, staff

Business communities along Bauchi road, Bauchi Junction and the permanent site of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have resolved to protect students and staff of the institution as well as citizens passing through areas from attacks.

They also said business owners would be held responsible for attack on anyone in their premises, if they failed to offer protection.

The decisions were reached at a meeting among the management committee, Chairman of Jos North Local Government, Shehu Usman; car dealers, management of filling stations, the leadership of small and medium scale enterprises around the university, and the representatives of the university.

The meeting was organised to find a lasting solution to the killing of students and staff of the institution as well as other citizens during any unrest in Jos and its environs.

Daily Trust reports how a 100 level student was stabbed to death in front of AYM Shafa filling station during the recent upheavals in Jos.

The recent crisis has forced the university to close down both academic and nonacademic activities.

Usman, who read the resolutions, said the communities had agreed to protect the lives and properties of citizens irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.

The Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) in UNIJOS, Bitrus Dagwer, commended the community for ensuring that no life was lost in the area which accommodated over 1000 students.
