Corps member, 3 months old survive as road crash claims 11 in Abuja

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and a three-month-old child sustained varying degrees of injuries in two separate road accidents, which claimed 11 lives along Abuja-Lokoja Road.

A witness, Abdullahi Saidu, said the first accident happened around 5:23 pm on Wednesday and involved a Toyota Sienna car with registration number KRD 602 EB at Kwaita village, along the highway.

He said the driver, coming from the Lokoja axis, suddenly veered off the road and plunged into a ditch, leaving seven passengers dead, including a nursing mother.

“But as God will have it, a three-month-old child and a corps member survived in the accident, while seven others died on the spot,” he said.

Our correspondent who was at the scene observed three corpses inside the Hilux of the police highway patrol team, while a female corpse was covered with cloth.

Four persons lost their lives in the second accident, which occurred at Awawa village, along the highway.

Our correspondent gathered that the accident happened around 4:48 pm when a petrol tanker lost control and crashed into a ditch.

It was learnt that the driver, who was heading towards the Lokoja axis, lost control and plunged into a big ditch while trying to avoid hitting a vehicle.

When contacted, the spokesman of the FCT police command, ASP Daniel Ndirya, confirmed the accident, saying some injured victims have been taken to a hospital in Kwali for treatment.

He said the command was yet to ascertain if there was death in the accident.
