Flight disruption expected as NiMet predicts adverse weather

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted adverse weather conditions that will be characterized by high winds and flash floods in the next three days in most parts of the country.

NiMet warned that the adverse weather, which will span from 31st August to 2nd of September, 2021 would lead to flight disruptions, slippery roads and bridges.

The NiMet forecast said, “strong winds are expected to accompany the moderate to heavy rains, which can lead to falling of unsecured objects, weak buildings, and exposed structures.”

“There are also chances of reduced horizontal visibility which can disrupt vehicular traffic and flight operations.”

It said, “there are chances of moderate to heavy rainfall events leading to slippery roads, reducing travel time, with increased likelihood of cars skidding off the road and chances of crashes.”

NiMet indicated that “in the next three days, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Benue, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, and Delta State”.

The forecast also said, “there are also chances of moderate rainfall over parts of Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Kaduna, Bauchi, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, FCT, Anambra and Imo State.”

The prediction indicated that light rains are expected over the rest of the country.

NiMet said due to the presence of a good amount of soil moisture and the expected heavy rainfall over the aforementioned states, there are increased chances of flash flood events on roads, settlements, farmlands and bridges.

It, therefore, advised the public to exercise restraint, avoid low-lying areas and fast-flowing runoff waters.
