No fewer than 48 communities in nine local government areas in Osun State have dumped female circumcision practice and prohibited it in their localities.
The communities stopped the practice as a result of sustainable campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by Action Health Incorporated (AHI) in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health and the State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The AHI Programme Officer, Miss Abdulrasheed Nuriyah, told Eko Trust that various communities in the state have been sufficiently sensitised about the danger of the practice and they vowed to desist from it.
Abdulrasheed spoke with our correspondent during the official declaration of FGM abandonment in 10 communities including Aduramigba, Ayoolorun, Ifeoluwa, Tiwadayo, Oke Mokin, Kusi, Mogaji, Asawo, Oye and Kuye in Egbedore and Ede South LGA.
The communities received certificate of FGM abandonment and pledged to handover whoever that practises FGM in their localities to law enforcement agents for prosecution.
