Task force arraigns 30 for rebuilding demolished kiosks at Lekki

Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce, on Wednesday, arraigned 30 people at the state mobile court for rebuilding kiosks that were demolished at Marwa Ghetto, Lekki.

All the 30 accused persons were arrested by the task force officials on Wednesday when they paid a surprise visit to the area.

The state government recently demolished several kiosks and shanties at Marwa Ghetto to serve as an alternate road to Lekki – Epe Expressway.

Chairman of the task force, CSP Shola Jejeloye, arrested the 30 people when he led a team to decongest Lekki – Epe Expressway.

Jejeloye said those arrested would be arraigned to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Government has been very lenient with them. We were here days before notices were served for them to understand the need to move away from this road. Days after that, I was here to serve them a three-day removal notice.

“We came the fifth day and we still allowed them to move their belongings before we removed all the shanties.

“We explained that the Marwa Ghetto they had built shanties on was standing on a strategic route that serves as an alternative road to Lekki – Epe Expressway. It also leads to the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

“But they have regrouped and rebuilt shanties on it. It is like daring the government. We would make a scapegoat of these 30 people we have arrested and clear the shanties again,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the agency impounded 57 motorcycles from riders plying prohibited routes in Costain, CMS and Lekki.

The chairman noted that the agency would intensify its enforcement of Lagos State Traffic Law 2018.
