India achieves full electrification for 3.5m in Jammu, Kashmir regions – High Commissioner

The High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, has said the Republic of India under the leadership of its Prime Minister, Narenda Modi, has achieved 100 per cent electrification coverage for 3,57,407 beneficiaries in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as well as Ladakh Regions of the country.

He disclosed this on Thursday night in Abuja while reeling out some of the landmark socioeconomic developments achieved in the regions on the occasion of the second anniversary of the constitutional amendment passed by the Parliament of the Republic of India in August 2019, for improved administration of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Regions of the country to further boost their socio-economic fortunes.

He said Keran and Mundian villages in the regions were provided grid connectivity with laying of 36 kilometres’ long 33kv lines this year alone, adding that the benefitting villages were hitherto getting only three hours of power supply from diesel generators.

According to him, 3,000 megawatts capacity projects have so far been revived and put on track while MoU for another 4,674 megawatts capacity addition have been signed.

He said the regions have witnessed landmark progress in the areas of strengthening grassroots democracy; accelerating development; broadening social inclusion; good governance; youth employment and entrepreneurship; energising the private sector; empowerment and justice as well as industrial policy.

While responding to a question on the continued concerns especially among Muslim communities around the world that the Indian government has not been fair in its handling of the Kashmir people, the envoy debunked such perception, saying the government had always ensured fairness and social inclusion for all.
