Ooni’s portrait made from waste, straws

An entrepreneur, Adejoke Lasisi, has presented the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi with his portrait made from straws and woven water sachets.

Adejoke, who could not hide her delight, posted on her Instagram account @adejokelasisiweaver that the first-class monarch kept touching the straws as he could not believe it was made from wastes.

She said she made the portrait as a gift to the traditional ruler when she was informed she would be hosted alongside other 23 Medium and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the southwest by the king.  She said the project started four days before the event.

“I consulted with my team and we came up with different ideas of what to do but we know the king only wears white which limits our options. Anyways, I asked them to help look in the store and see if we have wastes from the woven pure water sachets from the bags we made. After a careful search, we saw few pieces of woven pure water sachets waste made with white thread but we did not have the ones made with red thread. Our artist finally came up with the idea of using straws we made at Planet 3R as well,” the Obafemi Awolowo University graduate and founder of Planet 3R said.

Adejoke is a fabric designer and environmentalist whose company Planet 3R has won several SMEs awards.

She said the king was impressed with the creativity of the portrait, adding that it was done with the support of her mother and son.
