Bakers mull strike over high price of ingredients

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Kwara state chapter, has said it will proceed on an indefinite strike next month if the government refuses to address the rising cost of production materials.

Kwara AMBCN Chairman, Abdulfatai Alaba, said this while fielding questions from our reporter about the issue in Ilorin.

According to him, “The reason Kwara Master Bakers have not increased bread prices is as a result of the pledge made by federal government to look into the high cost of baking items.

“All South West Master Bakers, through our national body, met with the federal government and they promised us that after Sallah there would be changes in the prices of materials we use.

“But if we don’t see any changes by August as pledged by the federal government, we will be forced to embark on an indefinite strike.”

He, therefore, urged the people of Kwara State to bear with the association in the ongoing struggle.

He said, “We want Kwarans to cooperate with us in this struggle. The proposed strike is not meant to bring hardship on our esteemed customers. Our demands have not been met over time as many bakeries have closed in Ilorin. We are running at a loss.”
