On JAMB’s one-year validity period

I’ve thought of writing about the one year validity period for Jamb results for a long time. So many debates have been had about it.  Also, scholars like Farooq Kperogi have written about it on various occasions. Upon logging into my Facebook account this morning, on Daily Trust online page, I saw a caption written thus:  ‘One year validity period for JAMB exam remains a challenge’.

We must understand that the world is dynamic. It changes with time and the changes sometimes come with improvements. It is thus expected of a country like Nigeria to be adaptive. As far as a change doesn’t come with unending challenges, then it’s advisable for a person or country to conform to it.

A nation is supposed to be like a computer, that is to say it should be updated periodically. So in this case of JAMB’s one year validity period for its results, I call for a reform. For the past decades, JAMB has been a big challenge to many students.  Some students have suffered a lot under this arrangement. Some have, due to one reason or the other, abandoned their vision as they could not make it into the university.

When I read some of the stories shared by people who have written JAMB, I feel sad. There were many of them who wrote the examination and fortunately passed, yet couldn’t proceed to secure admission into the universities of their choice.

I am calling on relevant authourities to look into this issue so that the validity period for the JAMB result can be extended. That way more students will be able to gain admission into institutions of higher learning.  It will also help to keep the dreams of many students alive.
