Commercial motorists and commuters were stranded on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as security operatives enforced restriction of movement as the council election holds.
A statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Abdulwaheed Odusile, said the nine-hour restriction is between 7 am to 4 pm to allow the electorate to participate in the election.
Daily Trust reports that, as early as 7 am on Saturday, security operatives had mounted roadblocks to enforce a temporary restriction of movement.
Our correspondent, who went around the state capital, observed that hundreds of commuters and commercial motorists both inbound and outbound Abeokuta have been stranded.
At Oke – Mosan around the Governor’s office, many vehicles were sighted stranded as fierce-looking security men blocked both entrance and exit from the State capital.
Our correspondent equally observed a similar situation at the Lafenwa and Ita Oshin axis of the State capital.
Meanwhile, the State’s electoral commission had expressed readiness to conduct a violence-free election across the 20 local government areas and 236 wards across the State.
Speaking on the level of preparation ahead of the LG poll in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC)’s Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, said the commission had commenced the distribution of non-sensitive materials early to avoid any form of disorderliness.
He noted that measures had been put in place to forestall any form of violence, with a plea to voters to stay away from any form of rancour.
