NMA calls for lifestyle medication to prevent non communicable diseases

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano state chapter has advised members of the public to embrace lifestyle medication to guard against contracting non-communicable diseases.

The call was made by the chairman of the state’s chapter, Dr Usman Ali during a walk for healthy lifestyle as part of their activities to mark the Global Life Style Medicine Week at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

He said the idea was to enlighten members of the public on the measures to take in ensuring a healthy lifestyle, adding that practicing it would reduce pressures on doctors and hospitals and also help people live a healthy life.

Dr Abdullahi Kabir Sulaiman, Chairman NMA committee on Lifestyle Medicine, said lifestyle medicine was paramount as it involved self-prevention that does not require patients to visit hospitals or buy medicines.

He highlighted the six pillars of lifestyle medicine to include eating healthy balanced diet, being physically active, adequate sleep, avoiding or reducing stress, avoiding risky substance and forming healthy relationship with one another.
