I don’t want to hear unknown gunmen again, Lalong tells police

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has told the police that he does not want to hear “unknown gunmen” again.

There is currently a high level of insecurity in the country and most times, criminal acts have been attributed to “unknown gunmen”.

When Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, visited Plateau on Monday, he assured citizens of of improved surveillance as well as security of lives and properties in the state.

The IGP gave the assurance while inaugurating 50 patrol vehicles and 200 motorcycles procured by the governor to improve security in his state.

According to him, the huge investment into the procurement of the vehicles and motorcycles would not be in vain.

“You have challenged us by this gesture and I can confidently assure Your Excellency that we shall not fail you as we appreciate that to whom much is given, much more is expected,” he added.

He said: “More police personnel will soon be recruited to boost the manpower of the force while the training of the personnel is also being accorded serious attention.”

In his remarks at the occasion held at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos, Governor Lalong said the gesture was aimed at boosting the capacity of security agencies in the state especially in tackling criminal activities and resurging attacks on innocent citizens.

He said: “We have also realised that while we consolidate on the peace, the crises merchants are not sleeping as their source of business has been obstructed due to the actions we have put in place to restore stability. Therefore, they are restless and trying various methods to breach the peace.”

While commending the security agencies for doing their best to tackle such attacks and other criminal activities, he expressed deep concern over the inability to prevent isolated killings or arrest the perpetrators in some cases.

Meanwhile, the Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA) on Monday said working closely in a systematic fashion with conflict parties and ordinary community people would go a long way in producing the kind of outcomes the agency so desired.

This was disclosed by the PPBA Director-General, Mr. Joseph Lengman, while giving his welcome remarks at Plateau Peace Architecture Forum, with the theme: “Strengthening the Coordination and Decentralisation Roles of the Plateau State Peace Building Agency at the State and Local Government levels” held in Jos, the state capital.
