Several injured as Kwara APC ward meeting turns bloody

The ancient town of Offa in Kwara State on Sunday erupted in a bloody political clash when supporters of two prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains engaged in a battle of supremacy.

It was gathered that the crisis started last week when both political leaders embarked on their ward rallies in Offa.

During the clash, Daily Trust learnt that weapons were freely used by the party supporters leaving many with injuries. Two victims were said to have sustained life-threatening wounds.

One of them, who was reportedly shot on the head, is still in critical condition at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

Several witnesses and sources, who spoke on the incident, said the clash was between supporters of the commissioner for Water Resources, Femi Agbaje and those of Senator Lola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South).

Although several calls to Senator Ashiru were not answered, an aide who didn’t want his name in print exonerated his boss.

Mr Agbaje’s media aide, Azeez Idowu, had also absolved his boss of involvement, saying the “the ward meeting since its commencement last Sunday had been peaceful before it was invaded by political thugs”.

Speaking on the development on Monday, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi, said investigation was ongoing.

“At about 3:45 pm on Sunday, while on a rally in his ward around Tumade area of Offa, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Kwara State, Alhaji Femi Agbaje, and his group were allegedly attacked by some hoodlums wielding dangerous weapons and two of his men were injured in the fracas.”
