Reps to halt abuse in orphanages

The House of Representatives yesterday urged the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to collaborate with relevant agencies of government to ensure that all orphanage centres were registered.

The house also asked the ministry to ascertain the safety of the children at orphanage centres.

It also urged ministry to regularly monitor and review the operational activities of orphanage centres in the country for compliance with extant regulations.

This followed the adoption of a motion by James Adisa Owolabi on the need to halt incessant abuse of children in orphanage centres across the country.

He expressed concern over the proliferation of unregistered orphanage centres across the country where children are subjected to various forms of abuse.

According to him, such unregistered orphanages centers are often involved in illegal operations such as child trafficking and nocturnal abuse of orphans, hence the need to checkmate their activities through registration and monitoring.
