Mishkaham Mushere stool: Youths seek government intervention to end years of tussle

The Mushere Youth Movement (MUYOM) has called on Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, to urgently wade into the traditional stool tussle of Mishkaham Mushere which has been ongoing for about five years to prevent it from escalating.

President of MUYOM, Ambassador Duwam Bosco Kutsokot, made this appeal after an emergency meeting of the association in Ikngwakap – Mushere in Bokkos Local Government Area.

He said the governor’s intervention in the matter would help in the selection process of Mushere’s paramount ruler by the legitimate Mushere custodians of culture and tradition, and would also avoid the breakdown of the fragile peace currently being enjoyed in the land.

He explained that, “The purpose of the meeting is to strategise and come up with a solution to some major challenges Mushere nation is facing at the moment. We condemn a situation where some persons in Mushere land have hijacked the traditional stool selection process/system and are trying to misdirect things, while several other stools are left empty.

“This act has created an imbalance of leadership trust in Mushere nation. The other cases in point are also the situation in Kawel village which is now over 27 years without a substantive village head, including other villages like Margif, Horop and even the District Head of Mushere as a whole, are still on acting capacities.

‘“The absence of substantive traditional leaders has worsened insecurity due to lack of traditional direction since traditional rulers are the custodians of the people in their various communities.

“We are surprised by the involvement of some intruders into the affairs of selection/election of the Mushere traditional chief, an affair that is purely the responsibility of the Kingmakers, as clearly expressed to the whole world by His Excellency Simon Bako Lalong, during the burial of the late Ujah of Anaguta at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Jos.

“The Governor went further to clarify a record of his trust policy that he replaced eleven 11 traditional vacant seats in Plateau State without litigation because he did not interfere with the process.

“So, we want to appeal to Governor Lalong to sustain his policy thrust in handling the selection process of Mushere’s paramount ruler in order to avoid the breakdown of the fragile peace in Mushere land.”
