Lawan to ECOWAS Parliament: Proffer solutions to terrorism, cross-border crimes

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has charged the ECOWAS Parliament to seek ways of addressing the prevalence of terrorism and irregular migration affecting member states.

Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; Liberian Vice President, Dr. Jewel Cianeh Taylor; Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis; President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and other parliamentarians from the 15 West African countries are currently in Abuja for the parliament’s 2021 First Ordinary Session.

Speaking at the opening of the session Thursday, Lawan said the spate of insecurity and cross-border crimes were severe threats to the stability and economic progress of most countries within the West African sub-region.

He identified insurgency, drug trafficking, and ceaseless ethno-religious struggles as problems that continued to interfere with the freedom of citizens to move between member nations as guaranteed under the ECOWAS protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods.
