Gombe SUBEB moves to curb corruption

The Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has organised a two-day workshop on anti-corruption for its staff in an effort to curb corruption in the education sector in the state.

The SUBEB Chairman, Mr Babaji Babadidi, said when he assumed office in 2019 several cases of shady deals were uncovered in the board which included job racketeering, impersonation and financial misappropriation.

These, according to him, necessitated the workshop, which aims at acquainting staff of the commission with how to carry out their activities without falling foul of the law.

He said the workshop was organised for SUBEB officials and education secretaries of the 11 local government areas of the state; for them to effectively deliver their mandates.

Mr Babadidi expressed hope that the training, organised in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) and Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), would further clean the board from corrupt practices.

On his part, the ICPC Resident Commissioner in charge of Bauchi, Yobe and Gombe, Mr Ghali Baba, urged the participants to pay attention and practice lessons that would be learned during the workshop.

He said no system developed when corruption strove, adding that corruption strove due to injustice, inequality and deprivation, as well as the absence of professional ethics and morality.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of the state, Manassah Daniel Jatau, while declaring the workshop open, said the fight against corruption which started with the introduction of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) had been yielding results.

According to him, through the TSA, various hidden government accounts under Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs) were discovered where huge amounts of money were recovered.
