‘Why NASS can’t champion restructuring’

A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Ambrose Aisabor, yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately set up machinery to restructure the country.

He said though it is the responsibility of the National Assembly to do so, the parliamentarians cannot do it because “they are benefitting from the lopsidedness in the country.”

In a statement made available to Daily Trust, the ex-police boss said the level of insecurity and division in the country is unprecedented.

He said: “There is no doubt that the level of division in the country since the end of the civil war is unprecedented. Also, insecurity has taken over the whole country to the extent that no part is safe again.

“Mr President needs to look at the following areas to stem the tide of insecurity in the nation. There is the urgent need to restructure the polity by the federal government.

“The National Assembly cannot do it because most members are benefiting from the lopsidedness in the country. They can never see anything wrong in the system.

“The initiative must come from the federal government. The federal government needs to revisit the report of the national conference of 2014. There are so many recommendations in the report that can build confidence in the country again.

“Also, the problem of unemployment must be looked into. A hungry man is an angry man. Nigerians are hungry. We need to periodically review our economic policies to encourage diversification and enhance productivity.

“There is a need to encourage inclusiveness in governance. The practice of winners take all should be dumped. Nepotism must not be allowed in the system.”
