PCN Seals 561 Pharmacies, Patent Medicine Shops in Sokoto

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed up 561 pharmacies and patent medicine shops in 10 local government areas of Sokoto State.
The Registrar of the Council, Pharmacist Elijah Mohammed, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of their enforcement exercise in the state on Friday.
According to Mohammed, the enforcement team had been in Sokoto since the beginning of  this week.
He noted that a total of 536 premises, comprising 90 pharmacies and 446 patent medicine shops were visited by the team.
He explained that 37 of the sealed premises were pharmacies, while the rest were patent medicine shops.
He added that the premises were sealed for offences such as failure to renew license and dispensing ethical products without supervision of a pharmacist.
Others were poor storage and sanitary conditions, among others.
Represented by the Director, Enforcement, Pharmacist Stephen Esumobi, Mr. Mohammed also said that two arrests were made during the enforcement.
He said that other six pharmacies and medicine shops had been issued with compliance directives.
“The aim of the exercise was to ensure that all premises where medicines were sold fulfill conditions with respect to location, storage facilities, environment, documentation and personnel as well as they were dully registered.
“We advise the general public to purchase their medicines and simple household remedies from  licensed Pharmacies and Patent Medicine stores,” he counseled.
