The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) has bemoaned what he called gross misrepresentation given to some of the major legal accomplishments of his office.
Speaking during the Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sokoto branch recently, Malami listed the decision to proscribe the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) through a court order as one of his actions that were misrepresented.
Speaking on the theme ‘Justice Dispensation in Nigeria: Navigating Through Thorny Terrains’, Malami listed other areas where he faced criticism and misrepresentation as the Malabu case, engagement of counsel in Abacha recovery suit, P&ID Arbitration, judgement debt/Paris Club refund, and relationship with other law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.
He said such wrong interpretation by fifth-columnists, opposition party members, nay-sayers and others were some of the high points of the tough criticism he has faced as federal attorney general.
He observed that the criticisms came despite the modest achievements of the ministry under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration such as executive orders, multilateral treaties for anti-corruption fight such as Anti-Corruption Laws – the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Anti-Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Bill 2017; and The Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill, 2017.
