Security operatives foil jailbreak in Edo

Operatives of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigeria Army, on Wednesday, foiled an attempted jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ubiaja, Edo State.

It was gathered that the attempted jailbreak started as unrest by the inmates who refused to return to their cells after it was opened out as it is the routine practice.

It was also gathered that some hardened criminals among the inmates instigated others to riot, having heard of what happened at Oko, Benin and Owerri centres.

The development, it was gathered, led to the damaging of cells, the administrative blocks, the medical office and the perimeter fence in a bid to facilitate their escape from custody.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state’s NCoS command, Aminu Suleiman, confirmed the incident.

He said the inmates were eventually repelled and overpowered due to the re-enforcement of armed personnel of the NCoS, the Police Force, Nigerian Army, NSCDC and the DSS who were deployed to the centre to ensure calm and full control of the situation.

“The situation is under control and the inmates have returned to their cells.

“No life was lost but some staff and inmates sustained various degrees of injuries and no inmate escaped from custody,” he added.

Suleiman said the state Controller, Felix Lawrence, who visited the centre, commended sister security agencies for the effective synergy and prompt response.

Recall that gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had attacked the Owerri custodial centre on April 5.

Daily Trust gathered that the armed gang overpowered security operatives at the facilities and set close to 2000 inmates free.
