Only 11 out of 3,000 gender-based violence cases prosecuted – FG

The minister expressed displeasure on the slow pace of dispensation of justice for survivors of violence in the country.

Only 11 out of 3,000 Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) cases have been prosecuted so far in six states of the country, the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, has said.

She said this Wednesday during the launch of the National Strategic Knowledge Management Technical Working Group on SGBV by her ministry and its partners, Spotlight Initiative Programme of the European Union and the United Nations, to eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

She said a data from the SGBV Situation Room showed that out of over 3,000 reported cases of SGBV, 107 were fatal, 742 cases were still open; while 188 cases were closed and only 11 had so far been prosecuted.

The minister expressed displeasure on the slow pace of dispensation of justice for survivors of violence in the country.

Tallen appealed to the judiciary to be proactive in prosecuting cases of SGBV.
