FG dispatches probe panels to polytechnics, colleges of edu

Education minister Adamu Adama on Monday inaugurated visitation panels for 21 federal colleges of education and 25 polytechnics to ascertain the extent to which they had fulfilled their mandate during the period under review.

He said the panels were to review the performance of the institutions assigned in the areas of governance, academic standards, quality assurance, management of finance and relationship between management on the one hand and staff and students on the other.

Adamu, represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Sonny Echono, said the panels would also assess the condition of physical infrastructures and instructional facilities in the institutions.

He said to advise government properly on these and other pertinent issues, each panel was to carefully explore the terms of reference, including investigating the application of funds, particularly the special grants and loans meant for specific projects to determine their status; looking into the leadership quality and the financial management of the institution over the recommended period and determine whether it was in compliance with appropriate regulations, among others.

Adamu said the visitation exercise was neither a witch-hunt nor a jamboree for unnecessary and wasteful expenditure.

“It’s also not a law court; it’s at its core fact-finding exercise. The panelists shall therefore be held responsible for their conduct during the exercise. It’s pertinent to state that we have provided seasoned civil servants to serve as secretaries and administrative guides especially in grey areas,” he said.
