I am using National Sports Festival to prepare for Olympics — Brume

Nigerian long jump sensation, Ese Brume of Team Delta has revealed that she is at the ongoing 20th National Sports Festival to finalise her preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.

The reigning African women Long Jump champion who won silver in the Female High jump event at the festival said she was not at the games for the medals alone but also to prepare adequately for the world’s biggest games.

“I’m participating in the sports festival to sharpen my skills ahead of the Olympics Games. I’m not here for the medals,” she said.

Brume who won gold at the All Africa Games had taken part in the female 100meters where she placed sixth as Grace Nzubechi of Team Delta claimed gold with a time of 11. 46 seconds.

Meanwhile, Rose Akusho yesterday won the gold medal for Plateau State in women’s 5000m, taking control from the second lap and running a dominant race that saw her overlap most of the field to storm to victory. Akusho claimed the win in a time of 17:13.96.

Elsewhere, Rivers state won gold in beach volleyball with a 21-16, 21-16 victory in each set over Team Imo while Ebubuchukwu Ugwoke won a gold medal in the Discuss event for Team Rivers.

In tennis, Team Edo’s duo of Airhuwunde Osariemen and Aanu Aiyegbusi struck gold in the women’s doubles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rachel Adunoye and Esther Olamide of Team Kwara.

And Team Lagos’ Olopele Smart finished the event with a gold medal in the 200m Breaststroke Men’s event with a time of 2:38:88.

However, Team Delta dominated the swimming events and finished top of the medals table with 38 medals (23 Gold, 11 Silver & 4 Bronze medals).

Team Bayelsa finished second with 35 medals while Team Edo finished third with 29 medals.

In the 800m Men’s event final, Edidiong Udo of Team Akwa Ibom struck gold in a time of 1:49:89s.
