Plateau youths cautioned against negative use of social media

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Navy and Member representing Pankshin, Kanke, Kanam Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, has called on the youth in the state to desist from the negative use of social media.

Gagdi spoke at the 2021 Plateau Social Media Award, convened by Alfred Makut Macham, which held in Jos the Plateau State capital.

He said if positively used, social media would attract development, promote unity and security, adding that he was an advocate for the regulation of social media to control hate speech, blackmail and fake news.

“I am always very careful in my opinion in a decision that affects the generality of the people. Personally, as Yusuf Gagdi and not as a representative of the people, I strongly advocate for the registration of social media activities in Nigeria just like it is being regulated in developed countries.

“I support that because a lawless community is a hopeless community and so if the social media is lawless then it is hopeless. People will decide to use social media to call you all sorts of names and even perpetrate acts of criminality. But if it is regulated, it will promote security and good democratic values.

In his remarks, the Management committee chairman of Riyom Local Government Area, of the state, Mafeng Gwallson, said the social media has given voice to the voiceless in a way, but the only worry was its wrong usage.
