Assault: CCT boss still on the spot

Lawyers have expressed their views over the alleged assault by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, on a security guard at Banex Plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja.

There has been public uproar after a video emerged of the CCT boss assaulting the 22-year-old guard, Clement Sargwak, following an argument over parking space on March 29.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has demanded that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) take an action on the assault allegation levelled against the CCT chairman.

On its part, a civil society organization, Access to Justice (A2J) has called for the resignation or removal of the CCT chairman, saying the assault on the guard is indefensible and callous, and a naked and unbridled abuse of power.

“Unfortunately, the police have failed to arrest and charge Mr Danladi Umar for assault, signalling once again, the deep flaws and dysfunctionalities of Nigeria’s law enforcement institutions,” he said.

Umar has since denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was assaulted by persons who made sectional chants.
