Borno gov provides transportation for girls fetching firewood

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Monday gave some girls who had gone to fetch firewood a lift to Monguno town.

Firewood is the major energy source for cooking and heating among rural households in the insurgency-ravaged area.

Maiduguri-Monguno road is reportedly infested with insurgents who often set up barricades on select spots and rob travellers of valuables.

Governor Zulum, who was travelling to Monguno town from Maiduguri, was said to have stopped his motorcade 15km from the town after seeing 12 young girls struggling with their firewood by the roadside.

Abdurahman Bundi, a special assistant to the governor, who was on the entourage said on Facebook that at first, many people accompanying the governor were startled.

“All of us wondered what could have made the governor stop the convoy bearing in mind the dangers associated with stopping at the road notorious for Boko Haram attacks.

“Then the governor zoomed out of his official car and headed straight to where the girls were standing. He asked what they’d come to do there, about 15km to Monguno town.

“Governor Zulum ordered some vehicles to give the little girls a lift back to Monguno. Their firewood was equally conveyed on another vehicle.”
