2 Ebonyi feuding clans reach peace pact

The two major clans, Ezza and Effium, in Ohaukwu local government of Ebonyi involved in a communal clash have made a peace pact to end hostility in the community.

The accord was reached at Old Government House, Abakiliki on Monday at the end of state security council meeting with stakeholders of both clans in attendance.
Daily Trust gathered that the meeting which had heads of security operatives present was at the instance of the state government led by the deputy governor, Barr. Kelechi Igwe.
“On behalf of the governor, Engr. David Umahi we want to appreciate God and thank the people of Effium in Ohaukwu LGA for agreeing to live in peace.”
“Today is a milestone in government’s efforts that normalcy is restored in Effium community.
“We remain grateful to the governor for mediating and not only to meditate but to ensure that everything is done to cushion the effect of the clash.”
“The state government has procured relief materials to the victims of the crisis. The commissioner for humanitarian affairs has started sharing in some of the camps in Effium but we are still waiting for the people to return so that we share the bulk of the relief materials.
“Again, we made bold to say having lived up to expectation (as government) today, it is expected that the stakeholders would also live up to the expectation,” he explained.
The Effium and Ezza communal clash which claimed the lives of not less than 50 persons and properties worth billions of naira destroyed was ignited in early January 2021.
