Kidnapping: Kebbi mandates 70 boarding schools to beef up security

Kebbi state government is mandating schools to form security committees to safeguard them against invading kidnappers.

It comes after a spate of recent kidnappings targeting boarding schools in Katsina, Katsina, Zamfara and Niger.

The security committees are for each of 70 boarding secondary schools across Kebbi.

Special adviser to the state government on security, Garba Kamba, said the committee was a proactive measure adopted by the government.

“We are involving the community to safeguard their schools from any security threat. It is not possible for government to deploy security personnel to each school in the state,” he said.

“But we are engaging the communities where schools are situated to form a committee of vigilante in collaboration with the school principals for ensuring security of the schools.

“We also provided the schools with phone numbers of heads of security agencies deployed at various points within areas where schools are located.”

The committee is to be headed by a traditional ruler for schools situated in his domain.

He said though no school has been targeted in mass abduction in Kebbi, the state was taking stout measures in order not to leave openings for kidnappers.
