The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the appointment of 18 justices of the Court of Appeal.

The NJC considered the interview of 26 successful candidates who were recommended for appointment as justices of the Court of Appeal and Heads of Courts to President Muhammadu Buhari and the governors of Rivers, Nasarawa, Kogi, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Delta states.

In a statement by the Director of Information of the NJC, Soji Oye, the council also set up a panel to investigate a judge, and issues two strong warnings to two others, and dismissed petitions against 26 judges.

The NJC decisions were reached at the 94th meeting on March 17 and 18 chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

The justices recommended for the Court of Appeal are: Justices Bature Isah Gafai, Muhammad Ibrahim Sirajo, Waziri Abdul-Azeez, Yusuf Alhaji Bashir, Usman A. Musale, Jauro Ibrahim Wakili, Abba Bello Mohammed, Danlami Zama Senchi, Mohammed Lawal Abubakar, Hassan Muslim Sule, Amadi Kenneth Ikechukwu, and Peter Oyinkenimiemi Affen.

Others are: Grand Kadi Mohammed Danjuma, and Justices Sybil Onyeji Nwaka Gbagi, Olasumbo Olanrewaju Goodluck, Banjoko Adebukunola Adeoti Ibironke, Olabode Abimbola Adegbehingbe, Bola Samuel Ademola.

Those recommended as Chief Judge of the following courts: Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi (FCT), Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi (Rivers); Justice Aisha Bashir Aliyu (Nasarawa); Justice Sunday Omeiza (Kogi); Justice Umar Maigari Sadiq (Jigawa); Justice Ngene Anagu Elvis (Ebonyi); Justice Theresa T. Obiajulu Ogochukwu Diai (Delta); Justice Patience Onuwa Elumeze (President, Delta Customary Court of Appeal).

“Council also received notifications of retirement of 17 Judicial Officers and notifications of death of three Judges from the Federal and State Judiciaries,” he said.
