Chelsea and Bayern Munich won their respective round of 16 second leg encounters to join six others in the quarter finals stage of the UEFA champions league.
Both clubs comfortably overcame their opponents to join PSG, Real Madrid, FC Porto, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool in the draws for the next round.
Chelsea defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0 thanks to Hakim Ziyech and Emerson Palmieri, completing a 3-0 aggregate win.
Ziyech converted Timo Werner’s pass in the 36th minute while Emerson finished off a three-on-one counter attack as Atletico Madrid went all out in search of a goal.
The visitors were denied a potential penalty when neither the referee nor the video assistant team deemed Cesar Azpilicueta’s tug on Yannick Carrasco worthy of a second look.
It will be Chelsea’s first appearance in the quarter final stage since the 2013/14 season when they ultimately also crashed out at the last-eight.
Champions Bayern Munich also strolled over Lazio with a 6-2 aggregate score, a 2-1 win at the Allianz Arena that extended the Bavarians’ 31 home matches unbeaten run in all competitions while adding gloss to the 4-1 first leg win in Italy.
The holders also stretched their unbeaten Champions League record to 19 matches.
Lewandowski (penalty) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were on target in each half for the German champions.
The draws for the quarter finals of the UCL will be held on Friday 19 March in Zurich, Switzerland.
