NHRC investigates sexual violence committed in Sokoto since 2011

The National Human Rights Commission has commenced investigation into sexual and gender-based violence committed in Sokoto since 2011.

Caliphate Trust reports that the investigative panel is chaired by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Barrister Tony Ojukwu who said they have so far received 10 complaints and more were still coming in.

The essence of the investigation, he said, was to ensure victims of sexual abuse and other gender-based violence from 2011 to date get the justice they deserved.

“In recent times, a number of incidences sparked public outrage and condemnation of the brazen and gruesome dimension of SGBV in Nigeria.

“All these added to the call for a drastic and urgent measure to address the problem,” he said

He said the objectives of the panel included listening to the testimonies of survivors, relations and other witness accounts relating to the complaints received and to give alleged perpetrators the opportunity to present their side of the story and defend themselves.

“We will also identify individuals directly responsible for any violations and abuses and make recommendations for further actions, including prosecution, disciplinary proceedings and damages,” he added.

He explained that members of the panel were carefully selected to represent the diverse interests of the society.

He commended the government and their partner, UN-Spotlight Initiative for their support.
