Jels, who started recording at the age of 14, also spoke glowingly about his Liberian roots.

“I am proud of my Liberian roots and African heritage so I like representing my origin”, Jels said. I have experienced war and suffering, it made me very suspicious of people and when I first moved to the US I got into lots of fights because I had a lot of anger I was holding inside me.

Born on September 18 1993 in Monrovia, during the Liberian war, he disclosed that and is the only child of a single mother and relocated to the U.S in 2001 with his mother as refugees escaping the Liberian civil war.

He said while in Liberia, he got hit by a car when he was 2 years old and the doctors thought he was going to make it “but thanks to prayers from his mother and grandmother I woke up from a 2 day coma.”

Although he had to learn how to do everything again, from crawling to using his hands, he believes God gave him a second chance in life.

After relocating to the US, Jels grew up in Philadelphia in the hood. He said had a rough time growing up, and was forced to be tough at a young age.

He got into fights because of the name he made for himself. According to him, there was a time he and his friends threw a huge party, but the promoter did not want to pay them so they got into a fight and had to leave early because the party got shut down by the police.

He said he went with some friends to a store to get some food, where 12 guys from the party, followed and attacked them. He was 16 at the time.
