The arraignment of seven suspects in connection with the abduction and sale of children taken from Kano suffered a setback after the lead prosecution counsel failed to appear in court.
Kano’s attorney general and justice commissioner Musa Lawan leads the state prosecution team.
The seven suspects are Paul Owne, Mercy Paul, Ebere Ogbono, Emmanuel Igwe, Loise Duru, Monica Oracha and Chinelo Ifedegwu.
They face 38-count charges including conspiracy, kidnapping and selling the children in Anambra.
At resume sitting on Friday , a principal state counsel Wada Wada told the court that the attorney general had informed him to tell the court that he won’t be available and want to seek an adjournment to a later date to enable him come and continue with the case.
His request was however vehemently rejected by the defence counsel, Barrister C.A Olorisade on the grounds that no cogent reason was advanced by the prosecution team for the absence saying that his clients have been in incarceration for about two years.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf in her ruling granted the application of the prosecution team on the ground that this was the first time the prosecution counsel sought for an adjournment and adjourned the matter to March 12th, 2021.
