FRSC raises c’ttee on safer roads

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has inaugurated a committee on the proposed establishment of the National Road Assessment Programme (nRAP) to enhance safer road infrastructure and complement existing effort geared towards the reduction of road deaths and injuries on Nigerian roads.

The corps’ Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, in a statement, quoted the corps marshal as saying that the nRAP was an international concept and practice that had gained acceptance in regions and countries around the globe and that it targeted to purposely enhance existing road safety engineering practice and create safe road infrastructure for all road users.

He explained that the programme was a deliberate effort by concerned authorities to assess road infrastructure with a view to improve the safety of roads.

He added that the main focus of NRAP was placed on improvement of roads for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and two and three-wheeler vehicles.

Oyeyemi further said as challenging as the problems bedevilling safer road infrastructure were, the task of road safety was still achievable if the requisite research, technology and expertise were adequately harnessed.

Upon creation of NRAP, Nigeria will become an affiliate of the African regional body and by extension a component of the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).
