The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) has called for concerted efforts to protect the nation’s environment from degradation.
The group’s chairman, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke and coordinator, Mr. Edwin O. Orugbo, made the call weekend in Abuja during the special cleaning of Jabi Lake in Abuja.
They said the organisation, made up of experts in environmental science, top academics, consultants, environment activists and enthusiasts, decided to conduct a clean-up of the Jabi Lake as part of their contribution to protecting the nation’s environment.
“The Jabi Lake clean-up exercise which has become imperative, is occasioned by the unacceptable amount of waste material, mostly plastic waste, carelessly dumped into the lake by fun seekers and communities in residences around the only lake situated within Abuja metropolis,” Okereke said.
Orugbo on his part, said the clean-up, was basically the physical removal of plastic and other suspended waste materials for collection in cellophane bags for proper disposal.
Participants were drawn from a pool of volunteers, members and trustees as well as well-wishers of the organisation.
“Other environmental campaign projects scheduled to be conducted by SPP include a survey and documentary of air pollution by quarries within the FCT; a survey and documentary on charcoal production, and several climate change education and awareness campaigns for selected schools in Nigeria,” he said.
