New army chief visits Borno again

Ahead of his confirmation by the National Assembly, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, has visited army formations in Borno State.

The army chief, who arrived in the morning, on Monday, was accompanied by officers from OPL Lafiya Dole and the 7 Division to the Theatre Command Headquarters before he proceeded to other formations.

General Attahiru, who took over from retired Lieutenant General Yusuf Tukur Buratai two weeks ago, is returning to Maiduguri seven day after his previous visit.

All the newly appointed military chiefs were in Maiduguri during the previous visit.

Both visits were reportedly toward achieving operational readiness in the counterinsurgency effort in the North East.

The chief was briefed by commanders of various formations on the successes in the counterinsurgency efforts.

While addressing troops at the Special Army Super Camp 1 Ngamdu, he commended them for their loyalty in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North East. He assured troops of his support and robust welfare packages to boost their morale.

In recent days, several insurgents’ camps were reported to that been raided by troops and a number of suspects were either apprehended or killed in gun battles.

Troops had allegedly met obstructions due to incessant deployment of improvised landmines in anonymous locations by insurgents which often destroy vehicles, maimed or killed individuals.
