Joblessness forced me into robbery – Suspect

A 23-year-old armed robbery suspect, Michael Ogungbade, who was arrested for attacking people in traffic has confessed going into crime as a result of joblessness.

Ogungbade is among 27 suspected criminals arrested by detectives in Lagos who raided their hideouts in Lagos Metropolis. The raids followed complaints of attacks on occupants of vehicles while in traffic.

He told newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja, that all efforts he made in the past to secure a job were not successful.

He said, “In a bid to survive hunger, I joined other boys at Abule-Egba to collect money from traders.”

The Lagos police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest, said 27 other suspects were also arrested following complaints of attacks by victims.

Adejobi said, “The arrests were carried out by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) being a follow up to the directive of the Commissioner of Police (CP) to the RRS Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, to place certain spots under surveillance and dislodge the criminals hibernating in the spots, especially at Ikeja, Agege and Alimosho areas of Lagos State.

“Those arrested include Olajide Kolawole (26), Kehinde Ayoola (25), Dola Abdullahi (20) and Michael Ogungbade (19).”
