COVID-19: 17 die in Kano in 6 weeks

17 people have died as a result of complications from COVID-19 in the last six weeks in Kano State, the state’s COVID-19 Technical Response Team said.

The Deputy Coordinator of the team, Dr. Sabitu Shu’aibu Shanono, who revealed this on Wednesday while briefing traditional and community leaders in the state, said the state lost 11 people in December and six additional people have already died as of January 18 because of the virus.

He said Kano is experiencing the gradual increase of COVID-19 cases as over the last one week, the sample positivity rate increased to 12.7%.

Challenges

Shanono enumerated the challenges the state is currently facing in the fight against COVID-19 to include: poor public compliance to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols, low risk perception, and poor cooperation by confirmed cases to self isolate themselves or even be taken to isolation facility.

Daily Trust reports that the Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Rano Gaya (represented by Makama Gaya) and Karaye, together with several district heads as well as Eze Ndigbo of Kano, Oba Yoruba & Oba of Edo of Kano were at the meeting where the Response Team appealed to all the traditional and community leaders to join the state government in helping to curtail the spread of the virus as was done during the first wave.
