Artisans, shop owners count gains of Jos polo tournament

Tens of artisans and shop owners operating around the General Hassan Usman Katsina Polo ground are still counting their fortunes a week after the end of the international tournament.

Many of them, who spoke to Benue/Plateau Trust, said they have made a lot of sales from participants and visitors, who attended the week-long event.

The tournament attracted many players from across the country who participated, as well as supporters and spectators who came to watch the game.

Christopher Yilzuhun, who runs a car wash centre said he got more customers during the tournament than before.

He said before the tournament, he only managed to wash between three to five cars daily, but that during the tournament he was washing up to 10 cars.

Similarly, Albert Usata, who runs a  provision store for his father, said his sales rose significantly during the tournament.

He also appealed for frequent holding  of  such tournaments and other events at the Polo ground, saying that apart from boosting their own already established businesses, it would encourage others to begin small scale businesses.

The Polo tournament attracted over 32 teams, with players coming  from England, Argentina and South Africa.
