1,163 Borno’s displaced kids return to school

Borno State Government on Monday issued a statement saying 1,163 kids whose primary education was truncated after their families were displaced by insurgency seven years ago, have returned to classrooms in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum was said to have supervised a school enrollment campaign in which the kids were registered.

The statement signed by the governor’s adviser on public relations and strategy, Isa Gusau, said the pupils who were from “Guzamala and Abadam LGAs in Northern Borno, had been out of school since the displacement of their parents and guardians, by Boko Haram, following attacks on communities they lived.”

Zulum who appealed to parents to allow their children to enroll in schools also said “where functional schools were provided by government, social welfare assistance from government will eventually be restricted to parents who allow their children and wards to attend schools whether western or combined curriculum of Islamic and western education.”

While addressing secondary school students in Damasak and those who have written their senior schools certificate exams, in preparation for higher institutions, Zulum promised them government’s support, the statement said.

The governor who spent three days in Damasak, was accompanied by Senator Abubakar Kyari, representing Northern Borno, state caretaker chairman of the APC, Ali Bukar Dalori and commissioner for agriculture, Engr Bukar Talba.
