Gov’t spends over N11bn on 4 markets, targets 50, 000 jobs

The Yobe State Government said it has spent over N11 billion on four new ultramodern markets currently under construction by the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led administration.

Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, told newsmen in Damaturu that the project was aimed at creating 50, 000 jobs for the unemployed citizens of the state.

Bego said the projects are going on in four local government areas, adding that in Damaturu it gulped over N 2.8 billion; Gashu’a, N2.4 billion’; Nguru, 2.6 billion and Potiskum, N 2.8 billion.

According to him, the markets would contain over 600 shops each and equipped with state of the art facilities such as fire service stations, water facilities, passage roads, drainages, police outposts, refuse dumps, cash points, public toilets and dispensaries.

He noted that the project would engage traders, porters, cleaners, drivers, shop attendants, fire operators, tax collectors and security personnel, among others.

“Apart from the modern markets, Governor Buni has also resuscitated four dormant industries: Yobe Flour and Feed Mills Company, Yobe Aluminum Company, Yobe Woven Sack and Polythene Industry and Gujba Fertilizer Blending  Company,” he added.
